Method 1:
Cover a plate or a bowl with foil or plastic wrap. Now salt your "food" just as you would if the dish contained a meal.
Lift off the covering and dump the salt into a 1/4 tsp or 1/8 tsp measuring spoon. If it was 1/4 teaspoon, you added about 600 milligrams of sodium, 1/8 teaspoon adds about 300 milligrams.
Method 2: Use a 1/8 tsp measuring spoon to add 300 mg (or less) at a time to food.

...I use salt sparsely. When I do add some, I usually place the salt in the palm of my hand before adding it to whatever I am cooking at the moment, be it boiling water, eggs, etc...

Me too, but I like to quantify it. Used to think I only used a touch of half-and-half in coffee. But it turned out to be one serving (barely changes the color). Most people use 3-4 servings.

That's the key right, making sure you're only using the serving. If you ever eat potato chips, the service size is usually only a handful/dozen chips. Who on earth only eats one handful of chips? It's insanity!

That's what the doctor told my Dad to do, when he had to start cutting back. Now I do it, too. The visual, and tactile sense of what you're using is better than guessing how much is coming out of a shaker.

A McDonald's salt packet is 290mg sodium. I get fries at In-N-Out with no salt, then add maybe half a packet of salt.

I add zero salt to my food, so measuring is easy!
