We all know that Finn's backstory is being/becoming an ex-Stormtrooper. He also received this programming and training from birth (like all of the sequel trilogy Stormtroopers). It is similar to the Clonetroopers of the prequels.
Finn's characterization versus his backstory has been hotly debated on Star Wars forums.
Is Finn's comedy sidekick characterization appropriate for an ex-Stormtrooper who could be classified as a turncoat or a deserter or both? That's basically the poll question.
I'm providing 3 videos to compare Finn to. Choose which video you think most closely resembles Finn's characterization in the sequel trilogy. (This goes without saying for most of us, but keep in mind that Finn's character is an ex-Stormtrooper with lifelong programming - which is separate from his personality and comical characterization).
VIDEO EXAMPLE #1: A Clonetrooper who deserted after his unit was killed and he became disheartened about the purpose and nobility of the war.
VIDEO EXAMPLE #2: A Clonetrooper who became a traitor, spied against his fellow troops and sabotaged them for money.
VIDEO EXAMPLE #3: A stooge character in an old Disney channel television show (named Mr. Moseby).

I can see Finn looks like video 3 from all the way out here. And I'm floating around in the dead of space!

Eh, it was another no-win scenario (like a lot of the ST). Make Finn some stoic badass-from-birth and you just more Marty Stu stuff aimed at him, just like Rey with her not being a pathetic damsel.

And Rey gets criticized for not being a damsel or a useless sidekick yet Ahsoka isn't criticized, so there's just more hypocrisy.

I read the Aftermath trilogy and Phasma, both of which peer into the training sessions and personalities of First Order stormtroopers.
No, none of them would have been comedic. Finn does not in any way resemble a stormtrooper.

The reason why Ahsoka isn't criticized is because she is a character better written and harmonizes more with the lore/mythos of the Force. Plain and simple.
And those facts just prove our point that the criticism of Rey has nothing to do with her being a female. You just keep parroting the same statements over and over again because you like Disney making the lead character a Disney warrior princess, no matter how little SW sense it makes. And you can't defend it using the context of the SW universe. So you just attack OT fans and lyingly say misogyny is the motive.

There's been episodes in both the animated series where Stormtroopers and Clonetroopers have been protagonists - so once again, your arguments and accusations don't hold water.

The reason why Ahsoka isn't criticized is because She's a PT exclusive character who is long dead and gone by the OT and wasn't around to threaten Luke's prominence. Everything to do with her being a major protagonist whose very existence means the OT characters aren't the only heroes around in the new era. You mean like how the PT pulled midichlorians out of nowhere to make Anakin an immaculate conception? Sure I can, if the PT can introduce stuff like immaculate conception and the EU gives us an all-powerful Luke Skywalker then the ST can give us "Rey who is not an incompetent sidekick".

There's been episodes in both the animated series where Stormtroopers and Clonetroopers have been protagonists And are never heard from or seen again after some minor limelight. I'm talking series long major leads like Luke. And seeing how much s*** Rey gets for merely existing, I can assure you a stoic badass Finn who overpowers every single Resistance Fighter out there would be just as much a "Marty Stu".

Hims could've been a conflicted character similar to Kylo. Are yousa saying Kylo is dull and bland? Instead he's a clown who makes less since in Star Wars than Jar Jar Binks!

Some do find him dull and bland. And I'm comparing the reaction to this new Finn that Rey got. She's an independent badass heroine instead of a useless sidekick of Luke's and gets crapped on for that. So Finn the Badass-who-is-better-than-any-Resistance-Fighter would get the same crap tossed at him. He'd get complaints that he's too competent and too strong. So it's either he doesn't act like a Stormtrooper and gets s*** or he acts like a Stormtrooper and gets s***.

Her is a Disney character. It's nutso to be thinkin Rey wouldn't get criticism and rejection. If'n yousa made da major protagonist in a Star Trek movie a Disney characterization (such as da warrior princess), thems would get hated on. If'n yousa made da major protagonist in a DC movie a Disney characterization, thems would get hated on. If'n yousa made da major protagonist in a Marvel movie a Disney characterization, thems would get hated on. Yousa choose any other major movie franchise - same rule applies. Transformer fans wouldn't like it either. Only Disney and Porg brained fools dat think like yousen would actually think such a formula would be universally embraced. At least Disney isn't stupid enough to put thems warrior princesses in Marvel movies!... yet.

Anakin was major protagonist and Ahsoka complemented hims da entire series. Exactly, she was his sidekick and not a proper independent protagonist. Because she's not Luke's incompetent taglong sidekick. Like I've been saying, it's no-win. Because the audience (for the current movies) would want the movie to be about Kirk and Spock and would hate the idea of new characters taking over. Wonder Woman. Gender flip Captain America or Spider-Man. Any superhero, really.

Why would Disney be afraid to make one character an independent bad*$$ (Finn), but not another (Rey)? Dat proves yousen argument is bogus. No-sa! It'sa just like Tarpals said. Da reasons for da Rey and Finn characters bein da way dat thems are is cuz they both be template Disney characters. Rey is da warrior princess template. Finn is da needy, fawning, inept male sidekick who is da clown of da story. Da evidence is undeniable.

Plus, Rey is the actual protagonist of these movies. Serves better to have a contract/foil. Just like the OT characters were archetypes too, then. It's just that Luke was the least interesting out of all of them, which the ST wants to avoid.

Anakin was major protagonist and Ahsoka complemented hims da entire series. Exactly, she was his sidekick and not a proper independent protagonist. No-sa! Shows how little yousen knows bout da series. Ahsoka went on quite a few independent missions. Her actually saved Anakin's life far more times than him saved hers. So yousa description of her character is wrong-o. There has never been incompetent Force using sidekicks in SW. Never! Nor has anyone in da fanbase ever asked for it. If'n yousa says otherwise then yousa be a liar. Rey sux as a SW character. Fix'n a character by making thems true to da mythos is not a no-win situation. Dats da stupidest logic meesa ever heard. Yousa would suck at bein a Gungan warrior. Yousa just like Binks! Wrong-o! So very wrong-o. Wonder Woman is a warrior princess. Not a Disney warrior princess. Big difference. Wonder Woman's backstory is her received extensive warrior training since childhood. Her people are an elite warrior people. Her is not surrounded with inept male sidekicks who make comedic buffoons of selves. Her proficiency is explained. Wonder Woman is never accidentally successful. And her nemesis don't wilt in battle against her when her uses her powers. All those things Rey is guilty of. Wrong-o. Very wrong-o again! Both characters abilities are explained and development well documented onscreen. Thems weren't magically successful at everything in an overwhelming fashion whenever thems used they'sa powers. Especially when just starting out. In fact most superheroes have development arcs and have competent nemesis and competent sidekicks (thems that have sidekicks). Da only possible exception could be Superman. Yousa really don't know whatta yousa talkin bout!
