At any rate, he's still game to reprise the part of Superman.

With Affleck pussyfooting around Matt Reeves' The Batman, I dunno why they don't just make a sequel to Man of Steel since Cavill's still onboard and apparently there's a bunch of directors willing to volunteer from McQuarrie to Vaughn.

I never understood the praise he got, the praise he was getting before anyone saw in that awful film, when all he'd done so far was bad acting in other films.

I blame Snyder, not Cavill.
Cavill is a fantastic Superman.
Christopher Reeve will always be the best Clark Kent. But Cavill is near perfect once he is allowed to actually play the real Superman.

All they need to do is re-create the Oil Rig Scene, but let him, ya know...be Superman while doing it.

I remember, initially, not taking to him. I think EW had a photoshoot and 1 page interview, and I just didn't see it. In fact, I distinctly recall joking that they should do a live-action BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and cast him as Gaston (in my defense, the photoshoot had him showing off the chest hair and curls, so all I could think was the Gaston-Tavern-Song). However, there was an interview with him a good deal later. He discussed one of the things that really struck him about Clark 'Superman' Kent was the idea that Clark could NEVER give anyone in his life, a true bear hug because he'd kill them. That when he woke up from a nightmare at age 6, he had to be careful how tightly he held his mother as she comforted him. That when he excitedly high-fived a friend, he had to be careful not to knock the friend's hand clean off. And Cavill talked about how isolating that must be, to always have to be so guarded about your own responses and affection. That's when I decided (having not seen a trailer, etc., yet at this point) that they had hired the right guy. Then when you see how he is with child fans, how he talks about being able to make someone's day being one of the best parts of being Superman, and how he geeked with naming his dog- kind of makes you far more approving of the choice in actor.

Man of Steel was on FX yesterday for about the billionth time. I remember when it came out people complained about how it wasn't reflective of Superman. What were these people watching? Christopher Reeves Superman also killed Zod and Henry Cavill was just as wholesome, American, etc.; as he could be without being out right cheesy. It's a very solid performance. Hell, most of the performances in this movie are. it's a really well actived movie. It's a shame some the effects are just awful; a problem that seems to plague the DC movies. It really takes you out of the movie. Cavil is not a great actor. He's a bit wooden; relying more on his appearance than ability to emote.
Chris Reeves on the other hand was very good actor who did a lot stage work where he showed off what he could do. Unfortunately, no one ever saw that stuff. And none of the film work he did was amazing.
Personally, I like cavil very much. He may be the most appropriately cast Superman yet. But he's the kind of actor that needs a good director to bring a performance out of him. Otherwise he's more likely to just deliver the lines. Unfortunately he hasn't had either the right script of the right director to push him to a great performance.
And as Superman he is not likely to get one either. Most directors are good technically (setting up shots, blending action with FX, etc) OR good artistically (story, pacing and actor performance). This Superman franchise I think will tend to attract directors that are good technically, like Snyder. So...
Did you notice how much more human he seemed in Justice League? Joss Whedon!

I mostly just don’t get the complaints about how he’s supposedly some kind of psychopath who destroys cities and doesn’t save people. Apart from the fact that he saved the entire planet in MoS, it was also shown that he regularly saved people’s lives prior to becoming Superman. That’s how Lois was able to find him. He even explicitly took his fight with Doomsday into space in order to avoid collateral damage. If you look at the movie the VAST majority of the damage done to Metropolis was done by the bad guys BEFORE Superman got back (from saving the WORLD) in time to fight Zod. That's NEVER taken into consideration when that complaint comes up.
The damage done while he was fighting Zod happened because he was inexperienced and fighting someone MORE powerful and experienced than himself.
And as for killing Zod... Zod said so himself... he was never going to stop. Ordinarily I say imprison the criminal and give him his due process, of course. But how do you imprison Zod? There was no more Phantom Zone and no earth bound jail could hold him.

He sees the distruction Zod is capable of and doesn't take any precautions.

THANK YOU!I have had friends, coworkers, etc. talk about how Superman could have done so much better/more with the battle in Metropolis. And I keep pointing out (a)he's alone it isn't like he has the Justice League at this point, (b)He doesn't have Jor-El's techie ghost there to guide him or help him the way he did on Zod's ship, (c)he's this 20-something year old dude who lived the life of a farmer's son then sort of a vagabond before suddenly being expected to face off against the top military might of an advanced civilization to defend a world that isn't sure it shouldn't just hand him over, (d)Clark is just a Kansas farm boy vs. a fanatical, insane, deranged, military-trained, battle-hardened, totally lost touch with reality madman who also happens to have a small army of equally whacked out goons, (e)Clark is also dealing with how he just tried to fight off the machine that changes things back to being like Krypton and we don't know how fast he can regenerate from that so he's dealing with how first Zod's ship made him weak and bleeding from the lungs and then flying directly into the machine meant to turn Earth to Krypton and then having that thing trying to suck him back in as he flew away with Lois, (f)he is dealing with pain for one of the few times in his adult life- cause other than the times when he uses the lasers out of his eyes, he doesn't experience a lot of pain, (g)he didn't have any training in a one on one fight and he's facing arguably Krypton's best and most brutal in a direct fight where his enemy not only doesn't care about collateral damage but intends to inflict as much of it as possible, and (h)he did just have his brain scrambled by Zod's scientist as they tried to find the codex only for Clark to learn that he is the codex and all the backstory on that. I think, had the destruction not lasted so long in the movie, had the parts where it was just Zod basically tossing Superman around like a rag doll, been shorter- people might not complain as much. They had BATMAN V. SUPERMAN address Clark's feelings of guilt and inadequacy for all the people he couldn't save, and his feelings of responsibility for how everyone was endangered because of the search for him and because he was on this planet, with Metropolis and Kansas getting hit particularly hard. What Bruce says in JUSTICE LEAGUE is true, what makes Superman/Clark Kent so powerful and so beloved as a character in general (outside the movies, in the comic books, games, older movies, TV shows, etc.) is that he is so human. He makes mistakes, he screws up, he has a day job, he can do so much yet he can't save everyone, he has god-like powers yet gets scolded by his mother about his manners, he has loads of self-doubt, and he constantly thinks he could have/should have done more.

Nah, but the one who is the biggest Batman fan you'll ever meet (Adam West was her favorite), will argue all day that Bucky is not a villain. Otherwise, she tends to be like, "They did their best", yet won't extend to Superman. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one on the internet who loves Marvel and DC, lumps and all.

Uh, like take him into space or literally almost anywhere that isn't a highly populated area. Do you know how much of this planet is oceans? And that hindsight stuff is nonsense, they'd been destroying the city for a while.
