MoS. I don't think they even liked that they were making a Superman movie on Returns.

Def MoS. I think Superman Returns could have been acceptable in a bygone era, but had no place being around when it was made.
ETA: I also think that MoS has the better Supes. In general he’s just that perfect overpowered character that gets boring and I like what they did with his character in the post dark knight-influenced era. 🤷♂️

Man of Steel definitely because Superman actually threw a damn punch in the movie.
Superman Returns was pretty boring really and at a time when then the Spider-man and X-men movies were hitting it big and had a big focus on entertainment, Superman Returns didn't really have any action in it.
It was kinda forgettable and overly dramatic probably.
He wasn't a bad Superman but he was never really his own Superman. He was Christopher Reeves Superman.

Man of Steel for both. Though just to put it out there, I don't hate Returns and found it to be alright.

I've only seen it twice, but I think MoS has become my fave DCEU film. Better than Superman Returns, which was by no means a disaster

It falls in line with Singer's M.O. when it comes to these movies. This was the movie that made me realize how he makes movies. At least the "action" movies.

MoS. I don't think they even liked that they were making a Superman movie on Returns. I think it's the opposite. They liked that they were making a Superman movie a little too much. It's essentially an extended handjob of the Reeve movie. Man of Steel, on the other hand, was clearly made by people who think Supes is a boring p**sy and would rather be making a Batman movie instead. I think Returns is probably the lesser of the two evils. And I enjoyed it slightly more on a rewatch vs my rewatch of MoS.

They just copied Superman: The Movie then made Superman himself like 5th or 6th actor down. James Marsden was more the lead actor in the movie than Brandon Routh. I don't think they went in thinking Superman was a boring character for Man of Steel. I think they went in thinking that the previous movie version (because Routh was just Reeve) was a boring character. They pretty much went in with the Superman's powers and said "We are going to use Superman's powers!!" They went for action man instead of the empathetic Superman that we should have. That's the only real drawback in Man of Steel that I see.

The isolation he feels being the last of his kind and whatnot. They definitely saw the no punching in SR and went completely the opposite direction in MoS - too far probably. I was more referring to making him a brooding loner with dead parent guilt, ie Bruce Wayne with Superman powers. I think Snyder has even called him boring in interviews.

I think he should have went more into that. Instead of remaking Superman '78, he could have gone the route of the Mala episode from the animated series. He's so lonely that when another alien comes to Earth, he doesn't see how bad they are until it is too late. Or even have it that he brings them back with him. Someone he finds in the ruins of Krypton in some cryo pod or something. But they chose the same route of having everyone else tell us about Superman and he remain silent the whole time. At least Man of Steel let Clark be the one in on his story. Well, yeah, Snyder is a bit deranged in that aspect. Didn't he say that in his world someone (Batman?) can get raped in prison?

Man of Steel I think is the better and more watchable movie overall, but SR had the better portrayal of Superman.

Man of Steel to both questions. I used to hate RETURNS and find it more or less watchable now; the plane rescue is a standout action scene and that bank heist fight is cool. But while it's clear Singer loves the DONNER/REEVE vision of the character, damn it's a chore to get through. Give me city killing world engines over artificial continental real estate fraud or whatever the f*ck Luthor's plan was in that. Shame they got the best actor at the time to play Lex Luthor and he amounts to a grimdark version of the Gene Hackman goofball version. Oh right Superman. I liked Cavill better than Routh. Routh seemed to just be mimicking Christopher Reeve. It's too bad because he does have some good scenes like with Martha (always f*cking Martha) and more little bits near the end. Routh really isn't given much to do aside from reacting to Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth who was wayyy too young for the role) or Luthor or that darn kid.

Man of Steel on both counts. Superman Returns is too sterile.

At least Superman Returns has a better Lex Luthor than Man of Steels successor though. That's something.

MoS is a rehash but it rocks and has some artistic vision.

I prefer Man of Steel, although Superman Returns has the better characterization of the title character.
