That's the way that I slice an onion. But, I've never been able to come close to doing it at that speed.
The online tutorials always admonish that you keep your fingers tucked under, and let your knuckles guide the knife. Which, of course, goes without saying. I'm not about to sacrifice a manicure, for an onion.

It's funny that he cuts the root end off. Most things I've seen/heard/read say not to. It keeps the onion together.
