Paddy looks like he could play Marty. Was the story autobiographical? Yes, I agree. But I don't think the story was autobiographical, at least not literally, though I suspect there were things in the character of Marty that Paddy could relate to.

Trivia tidbit: Marty was written for Marty -- that is, Martin Ritt. But Ritt had blacklist problems & the part went to Rod Steiger (who should have played it in the movie, but I digress)
