While I do prefer Commando (1985) and The Running Man (1987) among his "lesser" 80s releases, those who kind of got stuck (damn how spoiled action fans were back then) in between his bigger classics (The Terminator and Predator). But Raw Deal is still a whole lot of fun, and gives Arnie a chance to break away from just re-doing the same heroic killing machine as with John Matrix. Sure, it does have quite an respectful body count, the cheesy one-liners and hard hitting action scenes, but it is not a bad mafia-action drama attempt. There is the action, the comedy, the tragedy and some surprisingly heartfelt and very tender moments as well, and I mean the end scene, that is such a great one, especially after the total mayhem which had just erupted into a bloodbath earlier on. I am always pleasantly surprised with Raw Deal, and I love the thumping big Kaminsky Stomps theme, just instantly sets the pace and atmosphere for what might come. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it and yeah, that is a nice life lesson, not to drink and bake. Yes, I love the ending as well with Arnie giving his old pal encouragement. And being a huge Kolchak: The Night Stalker fan, it was great seeing Darren McGavin in this and he did a damn fine job in his role.

2/10Super boring sc-fi action film is really forgettable. Like an Asylum film but with better effects and a A list actor.

6/10Infamous filmmaker Uwe Boll directed this highly disturbing but effective film about the genocide in Darfur and a few Americans who try to help them. Its like the fourth Rambo film but not as good. The major flaw in this film is the non stop shaky camera especially in the action scenes is very annoying. Otherwise for Uwe Boll its not bad.

Jesus, that headshot of Modine looks like it came from a photography studio in a strip mall...

Jesus, that headshot of Modine looks like it came from a photography studio in a strip mall... Oh man, Backtrace has to be one of the all time lowest for Modine and Sly, maybe more Sly since I have a feeling that Matthew sadly has appeared in far more of these "classics", while only part 2 of the Escape Plan franchise comes close of being this bad and boring at the same time.

9/10Highly entertaining survival adventure/action film that kicked off Rambo. Yeah, First Blood is easily among the best survival action-adventure films of the 80s, and one I would someday like to read the original novel of, if I can find it.

9/10Second Rambo film is just as good if not more exciting than the first! Not quite sure which one started up the whole one-man-army 80s former military muscle-trigger happy loner, sent out to do the job that no other man can do, and all hell breaks loose. But I guess First Blood Part 2 is along with Commando those who set the standard for that kind of explosive entertainment, even though the latter never took itself too seriously.

Not to be confused with the iconic video game series. But cheering on somebody else playing ‘Streets of Rage’ is way more exciting than watching this clunker of an action romp.

Couldn't help but notice from your rating through Letterboxd, and at first thought it was about a Cynthia Rothrock movie, well, until now that is. Never seen it, but I guess one have not been missing out on too much. The Streets of Rage videogame however, that I believe was pretty big back in the sweet days of 90s and Sega consoles as well with Arcade machines.

The Streets of Rage videogame however, that I believe was pretty big back in the sweet days of 90s and Sega consoles as well with Arcade machines. Yeah, it wasn’t good. Too much drama, not enough action. And the action we got was rather dull, and poorly staged. Honestly don’t know anything about Mimi Lesseos, yet somewhat underwhelmed from what I saw. Although I do notice ‘Beyond Fear 1993’ is in my watchlist. Maybe that one is better? During its release it probably suckered some people into believing it was related to the video game. It came out around the same time as the Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter and Double Dragon movies. Ps. One thing I noticed recently about Letterboxd that I find disappointing. The individual ratings disappeared. You still see the odd few on a film’s main page, but when you click ‘Your friends’ the rating section is gone. But they kept the liked section. Personally I rather see what somebody rated the film. Real dumb move… unless now it’s under the pro account features. If so, lame.

Yeah, I have noticed a few things with Letterboxd which can get frustrating, and I hope it is not something which might continue further on. Forgot there were so many big studio releases based upon video games back then, I think I prefered the later Mortal Kombat from later viewings. Not sure if I have ever seen a film with Mimi Lesseos in one of the leads, but if I ever do so, I guess Streets of Rage is probably not the place to start up with. By the way, I guess by now you have probably caught hold of the upcoming (think it will get a release this fall) Expendables 4. Everything from the title, tagline, poster and trailer feels like your ordinary DTV movie, but from what I have heard a rather big budget. Not sure how big roles Stallone, Andy Garcia or Dolph will have this time, but they are barely included in the trailer, so my hopes for any thing above 5/10 is not too big these days.

Was sad to hear about Treat Williams the other day, always a very likeable guy, where I think his buddy-cop/zombie action release in Dead Heat (1988) is among my favorites, and loved his performance in Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead. Should probably have went for one of his better films, but kind of wanted to dig up a few of the straight to video sequels for the Tom Berenger The Substitute (1996). Well, at least one of the re-watches over the weekend went up a bit, but either is all that, kind of start up promising then falls flat the final 20-25 minutes or so. However, there are a few familiar faces here and there, and Treat puts up a good performance, but is let down by the mentioned cheap "payoffs" as the movies near the end. I prefered the third one, even though it is at times very goofy and way more comical in tone than part 2, and it sure helps having the beautiful Claudia Christian thrown in there as well. However, I was sure I did own a copy of the 4th one, which took place in some military school, but maybe I saw that on late night cable years back. Should probably head all the way back and re-watch the one with Berenger and William Forsythe kicking some student ass, but from last nights re-views, both of the Subsitute sequels with Williams got to around a: 4/10 (part 2) and 4,5/10 for part 3

The Substitute 4: Failure Is Not an Option (2001)The last and most fun of the Treat Williams DTV sequels of the Substitute (1996). This time his next destination as just an "ordinary" history teacher and provocateur, the goal is to infiltrate an Military Academy with a bad reputation. It does not take too long, until the problem arises, where a bunch of neo-nazis known as "The Werewolves" is the pet project by the evil Patrick Kilpatrick. Anyway, the story and characters are paperthin, but the pace and entertainment makes up for that, as well as having the lovlely Angie Everheart thrown in. Bill Nunn has a smaller part, and gets in on the nazi-bashing later on. Where part 2 and 3 kind of fell off during the last 20-25 minutes, the fourth delivers the goods and I was surprised Williams did not make a 5th one, where he has to teach another troubled group of misguided youths some history lessons, maybe going down a few grades more and have the title go: There Is No Bathroom!5,5/10

10/10On hell of a thrilling and shocking ride. One of my favorite action films! I seen both the Theatrical and Extended Cuts of the film. The Extended Cut actually has some of the violence taken out for whatever reason. However it does have more character building and solid dialog. The Theatrical cut has all the violence and action in tact. Usually thats the other way around.

3/10Basically, this is a Fast and Furious wantabe. It even has the screenwriter of 2 Fast 2 Furious. Im a big fan of the Fast and Furious films and this is not them. Scott Eastwood has zero charisma and has absolutely no chemistry with Ana de Armas. In fact I dont recall a screen couple with less chemistry. Its a lousy car based action film. One or two good stunts but thats it.
