The problem is they have made every superhero show into a soap opera show with the relationships and the funny thing about Supergirl is she never had a main love interest like Superman has with Lois Lane or Spider-Man has with Mary Jane. She also didn’t have all these side characters and while I am happy they added LGBT representation to the show I feel a ‘Batwoman ‘show with Maggie Sawyer as Kate Kane’s main love interest would have been WAY better and they should have kept Kara single and not had any side characters. I would much rather see Power Girl, Comet, Twilight, the Legion, Superboy, Buzz and Batgirl and other characters who actually appeared multiple times in the ‘Supergirl’ comic books over Alex, Winn, James, Mon El, Maggie and Cat. Drop the secret identity especially the glasses since it was Superman who wore glasses – Kara and Linda wore wigs, drop the newspaper and most of all, drop the nerdy persona that is Clark Kent and not Kara Zor-El.
I think they humanized her too much having her grow up around humans and by doing so the writers have lost an important part of the character which separated her from Clark and in every comic book of Supergirl/Kara I have read going back to the earlier comic books Kara was more Kryptonian ‘cause she spent more time on Krypton than Clark and that caused her to be less trusting of humans than Clark and less human in general. I personally would have preferred the original ‘Supergirl’ Smallville spinoff with Laura Vandervoort as Kara over the one we have now ‘cause ‘Smallville’s’ version is the closest thing we have had to a ‘real Supergirl’ in live action– she was more Kryptonian, she had the attitude, the edge and she even won the Miss Sweet Corn Pageant and was a model in Season 10 which were all things taken from the old comic books and while I enjoy this show and don’t think it’s as bad as that horrible adaption of ‘Birds of Prey’ which was nothing like the comic books and Gail Simone and Chuck Dixon both put down in interviews it makes a lot of the same mistakes.
With ‘Birds of Prey’ the writers never read the comic books and tried to make it into a Batman show instead of a team show with the Huntress taking over Batman’s spot and Barbara and Dinah having some strange Mother/Daughter relationship instead of being best friends the same age who formed the Birds of Prey together with the Huntress joining later. With ‘Supergirl’ they have tried to make it into a Superman show with a female lead and I doubt the writers read the comic books before the show and you can see it in everything from the glasses, the geeky Clark Kent persona and Kara working as a reporter as I mentioned above and the final scene in the first episode where Kara confronted Maxwell Lord which was a direct copy of the scene where Superman confronted Lex Luthor in the pilot episode of ‘Lois and Clark.’ If this show was made by Marvel I think they would have got sued for it. The worst thing the writers have done is making it that she can’t fly in space when Kara spends a shitload of time flying around in space in the comics and met Reign when she was looking for the remains of Kandor. It is the equivalent of making 'The Flash' without him being able to run back in time or to the future and was a key element that should have been kept.
