Why won't the Avengers help the "irrelevant" people?

Except that them eating or shitting doesn't tell us anything about who they are as characters, and would thus be a waste of screen time (other than as a quick joke at the end of Avengers), whereas saving lives is what they are all about.. since they're, you know, super HEROES. Your analogy isn't well thought out.
