It can't be a planet since it has a side that drops off into space, yet it has mountains & oceans - and possibly other areas.
Best guess is that it's an artificial construction, something like an outer space Columbia (Bioshock Infinite)
It's a guard for your ass.
Seriously though, its another dimension, an alternate reality if you will, that doesn't really go by the rules of physics you hope to understand it by. The whole things supposed to be on a massive tree, so go figure!
