He died a couple of years later, and the film wasn't successful critically or box-office-wise on release. Maybe he didn't have time or just wasn't incentivised. He was one of the most successful actors at the time (rightfully so, if you ask me); it wasn't like he intended to have a directing career and gave up after his first feature. That's too bad he didn't live long enough to see how people view/like it now.. Many consider it Mitchum's best.. I liked it a lot. 8/10 You are right, it is a shame. The Night of the Hunter is one of the few entirely original films.
