Why are people on message boards so NASTY?

The thing is... If everyone was civil to each other, we would stay out of everything and nobody would even know we were here. The rules are simple: Don't post porn, don't dox, don't wave vulgar banners, and don't be a dick for the sake of being a dick. I'm not sure why that's so difficult for so many people, or why they don't understand that the squeaky wheels are ones that get the grease.


How much vulgarity is too much because you have already used a bit of the language yourself? I'm only asking because I sometimes use profanity especially when I'm in an argument with a troll. I try to avoid arguments though.
