Smoltz is much better than McCarver so the World Series tv broadcasts are okay because of Smoltz, Buck and McCarver together were unbearable.

You can say this about the vast majority of national announcers in any sport. They need to be somewhat bland so that your home town doesn't think they're playing favorites with the other team. There are exceptions of course - Al Michaels and Chris Collinsworth, Mike Emerick, a few others. I think all sports broadcasts should have it that your home town announcers can be heard on the secondary audio channel.

Yeah, I caught some McCarver on a couple getaway day tv games this year. Unlike national telecasts, homers don't need to explain the game so much. He seemed much less perma giddy which was nice.
I still can't stand him because on the Cardinals games, he's arguing with umps to get off his lawn.

I think Buck did have a while to get as good as he's been lately, so ppl may be still painting him with past reputation. He no longer seems like a national emcee so much as just a guy there to call & mostly enjoy the games.
Joe Buck is one of the finest at shutting up & letting the live event describe itself. I really wish more ppl would do that, esp. in the NFL which seems rare.

ps can Troy Aikman please kindly STFU from whistle to whistle... guy needs to take a breath so we can too.
