He may have initially wandered several streets in the wrong direction and been just out of earshot at that point. Within a few minutes of course, he is on the scene to witness the terrified kids fleeing the Doyle house, so you do have a point that he can't have been too far away to begin with . Perhaps he did hear her screaming but couldn't tell where it was coming from. Only when he saw the kids come running out did he know he was in the right place. Too bad our old "expert" isn't around to answer this question. He would have had a field day telling us how it nearly ruins the movie for him. I watched it yesterday and had a chuckle at the part where Brackett says the dog is still warm as well as the part where the laundry room door opens and shuts on Annie.
