If Lee wasn't in fact the shooter, why the hell doesn't Lee make more of an effort to insist that he's innocent?

Lee is self involved and petty. He realizes he cant talk gamby down, especially not now. So resolves himself to saying fuck it, ill bury him too.as for gamby not asking him questions, he probably doesnt care/ and or trust Lee's judgement at all.
