The misconception is that the Mariners would be signing Ichiro to be their everyday leadoff man and starting RF or that they'd have to spend $2m to get him. I get that article's talk of his offensive decline, but given that (i) they won't be paying him $2m, which that article seems to proclaim as set in stone (it's not, he'll get a minor league contract unless someone offers something more), and (ii) if you think of the other dregs around the league that can fill the role of 5th outfielders, it's not the worst idea in the world. Give him a minor league deal and invite him to ST. If he is old and shits the bed, you're out nothing. If he shows he has a bit more gas left in the tank, you're paying him a near-league-minimum salary and giving the fans a little something extra to cheer for. That's a win-win. Or they can sign the atrocious Alejandro de Aza to fill that same spot in the order for basically the same amount of money. Or Kirk Neuwenheis. I'll take Ichiro 10 times out of 10 in that spot.
