Yeah, it's a lot more popular than you are aware of I think.
I like the movie but I don't get the big fuss over it. As you said, American Graffiti is a much better movie.
A movie studio has to to sell the rights to Criterion in order for a movie to be in the Criterion Collection, which is why many movies that seem like more appropriate choices aren't part of the collection.
