I actually forgot that its reviews were that high until recently comparing it to Alien Covenant. And just for the record, Aliens (1986) is the most recent film in the franchise I liked. I liked certain things in Prometheus and Covenant, but as a whole, I just couldn't stand how dumb the characters in both films are. Sure, the space truckers in the original weren't geniuses, but at least that film had Ripley, though not a badass yet, was very intelligent. And Cain, Dallas, Lambert, and Parker were all at least average intelligence. Not counting Ash, since he's a robot. And Aliens had Ripley, Hicks, and Newt. I couldn't root for anyone in the Post-1992 films. The problem with the Alien franchise is that what was once genuinely alien is now all too familiar. The Xenomorphs are predictably violent and stupid, the humans are predictably dumb, and the Androids are laughing at everyone. It's all very pointless. All that franchise has is an iconic monster with a moderately interesting lifecycle.
