I understand that many people do not like the word "fear" in that context.  Other choices might be apprehension, foreboding, trepidation.  I suppose it would not have to be an "alarm at."  It would only have to be enough to make a person "circumspect."

I suspect the problem with people who defy godly principles is indeed a lack of circumspection.
