The motto on the temple at Delphi (know thyself) is a better path to wisdom [than fear of the Lord]. I understand that many people do not like the word "fear" in that context. Other choices might be apprehension, foreboding, trepidation. I suppose it would not have to be an "alarm at." It would only have to be enough to make a person "circumspect." I suspect the problem with people who defy godly principles is indeed a lack of circumspection. Yeah, I guess sheep are more timid than most carnivore species.
