the Romans saw him (under the name of Mars) as one of the greatest gods, Its not surprising that the Romans saw the God of War as 1 of the greatest gods since the Romans were conquerors and honored great Generals (like Julius Caesar). Also, the Romans were pretty bloodthirsty. The favorite "sport" of Romans was watching gladiators fight in the Colosseum. All societies are, more or less, and the Romans went through different periods as any other society in antiquity. Mars was not half as bloodthirsty as his Greek counterpart; he was also the god of fairness and fair play, and sought to avoid bloodshed. One of the major differences between the two mythological systems.
