100% with you. Although, I wouldn't say I like it more than the original, but it's pretty close. Plus, you can't go wrong with the soundtrack by Dokken. ("We're the Dream Warriors; don't wanna dream no more!") After that, Part 4 was decent, as it was just as creative as 3, but just lacked the heart of that film, and I agree, the dog pee thing was a bit stupid. Part 5 was mediocre at best. While it was creative, the whole thing about Freddy coming out of Alice through her womb was too OTT. Then, Freddy's Dead, which is the worst of the entire series. Freddy is too goofy, the film feels like a parody rather than an actual sequel, and the unknown relative aspect was done in horror sequels many times already (casein point the mystery of Freddy's child throughout the story). It's only worth it for the creativeness and so-bad-it's-good moments. I think I enjoyed Freddy's Dead more than Part 5, because of the parody aspect. I found it entertaining and was a gimmick movie right from the start, with the theatrical 3D ending which didn't work that well anyway and was hilarious. The franchise started parodying itself from Part 4 regardless, in spite of it's creative aspects. It was just getting a bit tired and long in the tooth. If Freddy's knives aren't being used to kill, then the kills can lost something for me in the process. Although I didn't mind Jennifer's TV death in Part 3, as it started out with Zsa Zsa getting slashed by Freddy and Taryn's drug death, Freddy's knives were replaced with needles, which was simple but effective.
