I think his ego had been bruised by the critical reaction to BVS (never mind critics seemed to like him the most from that movie but whatever) and his last film Live By Night flopping so badly. I guess he feels if he's in an arrangement like RDJ or Evans, he'd lose time to return to directing and further repairing that bad image he had back in the 2000s.
