Thor didn't beat Hela. Thor couldn't beat Hela. That's why he had to destroy Asgard. Because he was too weak to beat Hela and save Asgard.
The movie chose not to take the lazy way out DC would take, and had Thor make a real sacrifice to save everyone. Something Batman or Superman would be unwilling to do.
