i regard this as he's poking a lil fun at the U.S.
they're passionate about 'soccer/footy' over there as the U.S. is about football, basketball, baseball in the U.S.
personally i don't get soccer for the life of me and played growing up but i'm betting 99.9% of fans over there don't get football either.......
