It was definitely good as an R rated film, I'm not suggesting it lost anything for that.
But what would it have lost by being PG13. Can you think of any scenes that just had to be R rated or the scene wouldn't have worked?
I would say there were two definite scenes that were supposed to be graphic to get the right tone for the movie. The first one was the rural scene with the massacre of the farm family The second was the death of Logan, which showcased his redemption and sacrifice for his "daughter" I don't know if spoiler tags are necessary anymore, but whatever. There are also several other scenes that I could mention, but those are the two most prominent that lend the most to the central theme and elevate the movie. I'll think about it. Might even watch it again with this in mind. I'm just not really convinced those had to be R rated to convey that point, but maybe.
I would say that Wolverines Origin is the type of a film that could use an R, for showing him ripped open, to convey that type of unimaginable pain, so I could see where you're going here. IDK. Punisher yes, needs to be R. Does something like Deadpool really have to be though? I know we had a lot of off color commentary and that's great, I love it, but does it have to be there to make a good Deadpool film? I don't really think so.
