The film has a nice outlandish feel about it too, as though it is all happening in a heightened universe. Not surprising, since Lucas then went on to do Star Wars. He wasn't the best of directors, as his Star Wars prequels attest to, but when he was in his element in the 70's, he knew how to make it all happen and work.
