Outside a few (comedic) moments, I found it hard to accept Robin Williams in the lead. The visuals were striking but I haven't watched it in a while so I don't know how it holds up. The big reveal was surprising. It's one of those tweener movies. It's not bad but not all that good, either.
The Richard Matheson novel is outstanding. He is maybe the most diverse novelist I have read. He wrote horror, SF, fantasy, time travel, war, romance and even a few westerns. Not a great prose stylist but a superb storyteller.
