Batman Begins is very specifically the story of how Batman become Batman. So yes, it was a totally necessary part of the story. You can't have the "Begins" without the begins. The point of the movie is Bruce's personal journey to becoming Batman and how he did it. I'm so sorry that your idea of a proper manly man is someone who never needs guidance or help from someone else.
