I know it is all subjective, but I feel it is one of Disney's best live action features, not only from the 70's, but out of all of them. Well, of what I have seen.
By the time the sequel came out in 78', we had already been spoiled by Star Wars and Close Encounters and the cheap looking spaceship effects at the beginning just weren't up to scratch, even though they would have been keeping in context with the look of the first. It just wasn't able to retain the same magic, or wasn't as thrilling either.
