I guarantee he had better story ideas at the very least. Just don't give him total control.
EDIT: Don't make him director and/or scriptwriter and/or anything else. Just let him specialize at story telling. And tell him "No" at one of his bad ideas.
Watch the film once just to experience it. Watch it again to look for things in the background, scenes that you weren't paying attention to the first time around, this time with the power of hindsight to better understand why things happened. Watch it a third time to refresh your memory and purge misconceptions from your head put there by people bitching about inconsequential details of a work of fiction not meant to be taken seriously. Repeat steps for use in future debates.
