What other films, may I ask, Matthew the Swordsman? Is it a Frankenstein set? Whale’s one of my favorite directors, but he’s sadly little-known nowadays except in classic horror circles (“the Karloff cult,” as Sarris termed it). (There was a fictionalized biopic a few years back, Gods and Monsters, but I don’t believe it was particularly successful.) I think Everson’s comments (in Classics of the Horror Film and elsewhere) remain the best critical judgment of Whale’s work, but that means there hasn’t been much serious discussion of his oeuvre since ’74! There was, however, a good article at the website Senses of Cinema, even if I disagree with some of the critic’s conclusions. I ended up voting for only one of his horror pictures, The Old Dark House, in this poll; my other two choices were his off-the-walls whodunit, Remember Last Night?, and his excellent adaptation of The Man in the Iron Mask.
