The plot of the animated film was when Flash alters time the new timeline has Atlantis at war with the Amazons, so given Wonder Womans success and if Aquaman is even a modest hit then selling Flashpoint on that, as the war between the Amazons & Atlanteans would get a lot of attention, you than add Flash as the pivotal character who can set things right and sprinkle in the other JL members for a fuller universe and it's an easy sell.
The whole JL should have made $1.5b is stupid that's not what it should have made but what it COULD have made, Batman Begins made less than $400m Dark Knight made over $1b, Rises made over $1b also does that mean Begins should have made $1b also and is a failure for not doing so because clearly Batman is capable of making over $1b per film...No because that's not what it should have made but could have if the circumstances were right, circumstances for JL sure as fuck weren't right so why do you think it should have made max BO? that's just fucking stupid.
Again, what difference does the animated film make?
If Avengers made 1.5, why couldn't Justice League. I keep hearing about how famous their characters are.
Because that's the fucking plot of Flashpoint ffs, so by heavily promoting the war aspect of Flashpoint using the bonafide star of Wonder Woman and the potential star of Aquaman and the massive battle between their forces is an easy selling point for flashpoint, that is why people will come to see the film, do you understand now?

As for Avengers, Avengers was a success for everything outside of it's film predecessors, outside of the Iron Man's none of the other MCU films were blow away hits, but they did well and they made money for Marvel in other ways which is where Disney came in and brought them for a huge amount, buying Marvel for $4b made Marvel something to take note of, and with Disney's backing came Disney's money & influence, there's a reason why since Disney got hold of the brand that brand can take C & D list characters and give them their own films and effortlessly make more money than any of the Phase 1 films not starring RDJ, thanks to the Disney purchase Marvel got infused with a lot of prestige and clout.
Compare that to as I said Batman Begins, it was written & directed by the same guy, it featured the same actors & it had the same tone & style of the other films in the Dark Knight trilogy but it made less than 40% what either the other films did, and the why is simple, it wasn't in a place to make more, the tarnish of Batman & Robin sullied the Batman name, Begins had to be great to rehab it and because it was it allowed Dark Knight to be a massive hit, the massive hit or Dark Knight allowed Rises to be an even bigger hit despite being an inferior film to Dark Knight because Dark Knight gave Rises all the lead in it needed to be a massive hit.
WB just let too much shit go by without correcting things, compared to Marvel or Disney who you know look at the Han Solo film, all that shit happened and the worked double time to reshape opinions, they put out so much filler but positive little things like Ron Howard's tweets of the sets and stuff, they didn't just sit around and let negative shit come out over and over again, hell they greenlit a Rian Johnson before Last Jedi which just adds to the hype of Last Jedi because shit they must love this film if their giving the guy free reign to do a new trilogy of his own making, and that's why JL was never going to do Avengers numbers this time around, but say 5 years time if they give us some solid WW2, Flashpoint, Aquaman, MOS 2, The Batman and so on then a JL2 could piss all over Avengers, just like how IW is likely to piss all over Avengers & Ultron when it comes out.
