I have the Making of souvenir magazine from 1980 and he compared it to a silent movie at the time.
There's a picture of ILM people making Star Destroyer greebles and they are dressed in hazmat suits as they do it.
I dont know if they did that as a joke or the glue was so toxic they had to.
