You raise an interesting point, but no, I don't think that's why and I don't think you think that either. If you were being honest, why didn't Luke take a poke at Kylo during that scene?

1. The entire climax of the saga was when Luke learned not to fight. So yes I do think that either.

2. Looks like he succeeded doing it his way.

3. Critics would have complained that a Force Projected Light Saber actually doing something vs a real one was too much of a stretch.
