Spoilery question about how Lukes story ends...

I've seen countless films where a protagonist has been in an accident, blown up, hit with 2x4's, sinking into the murky depths, where at the last possible moment they wake up and make a bid for safety, and not once did I even dream that the storyteller was trying to convey that a supernatural force was responsible for the awakening. I'm not going to choose now to start unless there is something in the story to make me believe that.
