None of this really feels like a retcon to me. I'll go by one by one, but first I want to say its not a slap in the face to JJ Abrams or the fans. Abrams did his job, he made an exciting Star Wars movie, he created characters we like, and laid the groundwork for the story. He had no intention of returning to the franchise until Treverrow was fired. He didn't have a say in how the story evolved, and Rian Johnson has said he never gave him any ideas of where he intended any of that stuff to go. A slap in the face to fans, really? Star Wars fans obsess over characters that never enter the foreground of the screen. I'm not trashing fans overthinking everything, it's fine, I do it too, but it's not the filmmakers job to appease your theories.
ll go through these one by one.
Snoke - You really think Rian Johnson is perusing message boards reading peoples theories on who he is, and made his decision to spite the fans? Let's face it, Snoke was a pointless character, just as Palpatine was a useless character. We got just as much out of Snoke in Force Awakens and Last Jedi as we got out of Palpatine in Empire and Return. He's a hologram, then he shows up, he tempts our hero and then gets killed by his apprentice. He's just a scary looking guy in a chair, he's not the main antagonist of the series, that's Kylo Ren. We now have the opportunity to see an Ep9 that isn't just a rehash of Return of the Jedi, because that was already covered. We can move forward now. Think on the bright side, Snoke Theorists, now your theory is preserved in amber, you can't be proven wrong.
The Resistance - I dunno, this doesn't matter to me, I didn't even notice they were called Rebels. First Order, The Resistance, it's all the same, they're still just the Empire and Rebels. Moving on.
The New Republic - I took it as the New Republic was completely wiped out by Starkiller and the galaxy is the wild west and First Order has the advantage. Abrams really didn't give us much on how the Republic works anyway.
Knights Of Ren - This is almost a retcon, but not really. We have no idea what happened between the time Luke entered Ben Solo's cabin with lightsaber drawn, and Ren emerging to destroy the Jedi temple. Perhaps the Knights were also students, who knows. Johnson wasn't exploring that though, he was exploring Luke's role in the destruction.
Rey's Parents - I don't care about fan speculation and neither does anyone at Lucasfilm. I don't want Rey's parents to be important. I loved that they were nobody's. The answer was always gonna be lame no matter what.
Luke being on Ach-To - Perhaps he did originally go there to find some truth, but like Yoda on Dagobah, he started losing his mind. Whereas Yoda became a bit of a crazy hippie during his years in isolation, Luke became bitter and cynical. It makes sense too, Luke doesn't have the luxury of living in peace. Yoda reigned for centuries before the Clone Wars, Luke didn't really accomplish anything outside of blowing up the Death Star. He's the prototypical Baby Boomer, young and idealist turned complacent failure.
Captain Phasma - As Johnson has been saying in interviews, she's the Kenny from South Park of the franchise. I'm game if Abrams want to bring her back to die again.
Ren's obsession with Vader - This is called character development. Let the past die.
C3PO's arm - This is a nitpick. Who cares? You want precious seconds of runtime to go to explaining how he got his arm back?
ll go through these one by one.
