Slim Pickens had done comedy before (Dr Strangelove), but in this movie he's hillarious!!
Love the reference of Richard Dix, when he rode into town..
The Gabby Hayes parody nonsense speach in church...
The big Count Basie orchestra out in the desert sands, maybe a reference that he used to play at the Sands' in Las Vegas..
Frankie Laine (who according to Mel Brooks didn't understand what he was singing) gives it his whole...
Every viewing of this movie I spot something new I hadn't thought of before
According to Mel Brooks the role played by Gene Wilder was first offered to John Wayne, who loved the script, but didn't dare to gamble on his screen persona (comedy was OK, but parody He had doubts about) but promised Brooks f if the movie is ever done "I will buy Tickets". The role went instead to Gig Young, who according to Mel Brooks was a huge problem since he was an alcoholic, and was fired from the movie, and Brooks promised himself never to employ an alcoholic ever again.
