It's purposely vague. That is part of it's appeal for me.
They all assume that their creators would love them and answer their questions, but they were wrong. Their creators don't care about them at all and THAT is the point of that scene. It's a "curiosity killed the cat" type situation.
David asks the same question about us creating him. "Why do you think human's created me" he asks and the other guy answers "because we could."
