I doubt he was an Egyptian atheist either. More likely he was some Macedonian teenager getting paid some paltry commission for churning out fake news stories for gullible fools who get their news from Reddit and spread it around without even bothering to check whether any reputable news source is touching it.

The guy claiming to be an Egyptian atheist was separate from the news story. Atheists are already very oppressed over in Egypt, which is why it surprised me that it wasn't already illegal:

This article shows that although atheism isn't technically illegal, you are liable to go to jail for publicly expressing atheist opinions.
