Bad writing and forced world-building is what washed Amazing Spider-Man 2 out. The film just had too many plot threads in which the film became over-stuffed: the Peter-Gwen relationship arc, Peter trying to find the truth about his parents, and Harry's corporate struggle against the members of the board and teaming up with Electro. I found Electro's motivation for hating Spider-Man to be weak. Ultimately by the time Gwen died, the movie had worn out its welcome and I remember feeling so uncomfortable in my chair because the movie was going on too long.
The scene when the "man in the shadows" visits Harry in the asylum should have been a post-credits scene instead of being another subplot that's integrated in the main storyline. Practically, the main reason why The Amazing Spider-Man 2 exists was to act as a stepping stone towards The Sinister Six, and it felt sort of forced.
On the other hand, Spider-Man: Homecoming had a more focused storyline with Peter balancing his personal life and being Spider-Man. The world-building with Spider-Man being offered a chance to be an Avenger felt part of the storyline given that was Peter's motivation throughout the film, although that should have been Uncle Ben's death.
