A film by Ingmar Bergman is always an excellent choice. He was able to tell us the saddest and most horrible truths in quiet pictures, that are difficult to get rid of. Jan's metamorphosis from a soft and introverted man to a selfish and ruthless one as one of the *side effects* of an unspecified war is brilliantly played by Max von Sydow. What a great actor he is, one of the greatest, but terribly underrated. I've recently seen him on TV in *Pelle the Conqueror* . He is one of those rare actors that make us forget the actor behind the character. Great film, though it isn't advisable to watch it while going through a depressive phase. Max Von Sydow was high in the running on movie fan polls to receive an Honorary Academy Award in 2018. Perhaps only second to Doris Day in those I looked at this autumn. The Academy will finally reward a loyal supporter, presenter and friend in Donald Sutherland who's never had a competitive nomination. I think two-time nominee Von Sydow remains a strong contender to receive a golden statuette in future for his contributions to cinema as he's made alot of international pictures and is reasonably well known to most voters.
