For me, yes. The central issues were Luke and Rey. Rey I think gets what she needs out of this story and Luke doesn't. So if both of them had come out of this more upbeat I think that would have made us feel like the movie was hopeful as opposed to meh.

Thoughts?

For me, Luke showing up on Crait and getting killed means that Kylo Ren kills Han in one movie, then Luke in the next. Kylo is a good villain, but he isn't worthy of that in my opinion.

This way Luke truly defeats Kylo by using his hubris to buy time for everyone to escape.

Now...was him just giving himself over to the force slightly out of left field? Yes. But if he had to die (which I admit is debatable) it was better for him to go this way than with a showdown on Crait.
