You're not getting it. This is where the different mindset between the societies lie. 200 years ago, God was the prime mover and mindless submission for the vast majority of the population was normal. Anyone who questioned this was castigated.

This isn't really true.

Religion has always been a spoke in civilization accompanied by culture, commerce, & government.

There's nothing new about this normal which has always been based on what people want to do and that includes how they want to worship.
