Announcers are right, Steelers didn't need to onside kick. You put your season on one throw of the dice with a low probability of success. To use another gambling analogy, its about like drawing into an inside straight. Foolish play calling killed Pittsburgh. Two lousy 4th down calls, never pressuring Bortles. True but then if they hadn't onside kicked and the Jags ran the ball with several first downs like they've been doing and ran the clock down everybody would be saying "they should have tried an onside kick." The fact that the Jags did go 3-and-out after the onside kick tends to confirm your view, but it's different when you are trying to get FG position rather than just trying to get first downs to run down the clock.
