I am not being "all or nothing." I found Lithgow's villain to be one of the dullest in these B movie action films. I felt the same in 93. He's ok.
That's how I would rate him.

I am a fan of Lithgow's villain though.

Malkovich is in between Rickman and Lithgow. Mitch Leary is a very good villain, Hans Gruber is an all time great villain and Qualen is just a good villain. I mostly like Qualan because of Lithgow's awesome performance. I agree that the writing of his character is generic. I do agree about that.

A mediocre villain is Killer in Dirty Harry imo. The writing is good enough but I don't find Andrew Robbinson's performance very effective. Luckily Clint Eastwood is there to pick up the slack.
