Angela's Ashes and how religion is bogus

It is sorta and it's also depressing as hell. 

I like the part where the teacher makes the kid write the essay on why Christ would like Limerick and when he does the opposite he takes him to the headmaster seeking punishment but the kid is rewarded instead. 
A nice "In your face" moment to the angry, oppressive teacher. 

I suppose we are supposed to be happy for him that he escapes that hell hole to come to America but what about those he left behind? 
What happens to them? 
Felt bad for the mom though.
