He's recounting the Catholic activities (practiced regularly) as depicted in the book/film by a catholic. They exist outside the book/film. Practiced by Catholics. Weird. It's almost as if you can say the reference to the movie wasn't necessary. I guess he could have described the scenario depicted in the film and how it made him dwell on the dynamic without actually mentioning it was in the film, but why on earth he'd need to do so is a mystery. Books and films inspire discussion of their contents all the time.
