I don't think the concept of 'bogus' in meaning fake or invented, is the whole story at all with religion. It is very real and IMHO was invented as an elaborate form of controlling the population. They invented a 'deity' and fear of that deity made the population obey laws and tenets allegedly pertaining to that 'religion' even though it was a lie that the laws came direct from that deity through one of two methods.

it was a clever ruse perpetuated on society for millennia, and now, after the various revolutions of modern thought, is outdated since a rise of secular and political entities of 'crowd control'.
