Well, it's not throwaway since people adhere to it.
This is incorrect. There is no civilization on the planet that is living only by universal code. We follow rules that are codified and enforced. While the list for sin is far smaller than any given justice system's rule of law, both are things implemented to control behavior within a certain societal structure. Both are standards. Granted the religious one is the higher one, but it's also the one that is voluntary.
It does matter, because what you refer to as sin, is just your own interpretation of your own moral and ethical code.
Sin is just a throwaway term to describe bad behavior, based on someone or something—like scripture—else's projection.
All there is is action and consequence and it has nothing to do with religion. That is the universal code or even law.
