No matter how you slice it, the film's box office performance was a disappointment. This film was meant to be their answer to The Avengers, and it failed on every conceivable level.
Numbers for Wednesday 1/10/18
Title Avg/Scrn Amount Day
THOR: RAGNAROK $140 $45,469 69
JUSTICE LEAGUE $78 $40,350 55
It's presently running at 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, only 26% from "top critics." It was a huge mistake not to fire Zack Snyder and start over after BvS. If JL is as bad as this suggests (and the critics have largely been correct about all of the WB DC adaptations so far, except WONDER WOMAN), this will be their 5th turd in a row. Too bad.
It probably not even make double its budget (everyone suspects–and they're probably right–that its reported production budget is nonsense and that it cost a lot more). Probably closer to $400 million than $300 mil. Ugh, it should not be happening this way. The Justice League should have been able to be a contender, instead of a necessary sacrifice to put the series on the right track, and whether it even is on the right track now is questionable. Justice League should have been the first one of these huge superhero team-ups to happen.
In fact, Justice League should be the last film in this run; a full reboot should have followed BvS, it especially should have followed JL. The Aquaman movie is already in the can, a consequence of WB's continuing to try to ram these movies through as soon as possible instead of doing it right, but Wonder Woman just made too much money to not do the sequel, Ither than that, though, no sane executive is going to want to continue with this trainwreck. Which doesn't mean they won't; they've kept at it so far, and none of these films should have ever happened, much less been built upon. They've completely destroyed their DC brand and they can't be unaware of this. JL was the biggest property they had, by far–nothing else even comes close–and it was a disaster. No one at WB is going to look at those numbers and think, "That's ok, the solo Cyborg and Flash movies will save us!"
The fact anyone ever defended this mess is amazing!
